Don Sherman

Born and raised in Iowa, Don began “driving” at age five in a pedal car he received as a birthday present. By age ten, he was building soapbox racers, fiddling with engines, and converting lawn mowers into go-karts. Delving deeper, Don earned mechanical engineering degrees from the Universities of Iowa and Michigan. He credits his father with guiding him toward an engineering career path, the Army with interrupting that endeavor at Chrysler, and Car and Driver magazine for the opportunity to share his fascination with a million or so readers. Don rose through the ranks at that publication to become its editor from 1985 through 1987. For the last twelve years, Don has filled the gaps in his freelance writing schedule with car and motorcycle restorations. He contributes to Car and Driver, Popular Science, Corvette Quarterly, Sports Car International, Auto Restorer, Quattroruote, and other magazines. The Sherman family garage is tightly packed with a 1960 Cadillac convertible, a 1979 Mazda RX7, a 1939 Ariel Square Four, a 1972 Triumph Daytona, a 1997 Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster, several wheeled toys for sons Carter and Steven, and the subject of this book. In spite of its congested state, Don still calls his garage the best room in the house.
