Equations of Motion review from Pur Sang, Fall 2006
Equations of Motion details the adventurous nine-decade evolution of Bill Milliken"s important technical contributions to aircraft and automobile development and to the science of auto racing as both an active participant in the sport and an ongoing chassis design innovator. The writing is very captivating throughout, even on the technical subjects.
The book is a fascinating history of Bill"s life starting with his growing up in Maine, his engineering education, his war efforts, his fascination with flying including building his own airplane, his automobile racing in the forties and fifties and his automotive research career to the present day.
Near the middle of the 660-page book, Bill recounts his extensive racing career and his recollections of racing the Types 35A, 51 and 54 Bugattis in the early years of the SCCA. He details many of the unorthodox modifications he conducted as well as several colorful and fortunately noninjurious crashes. The book also has numerous unpublished photos of Bill racing the Bugattis.
Equations Motion also provides meaningful insight into the development of Bill himself, who from age 5 to 95 has pursued the same passions with boyish enthusiasm and drive. He is a true American hero, and I think every Bugatti owner and automotive enthusiast will find the entire book to be very enjoyable. The foreword is written by his good friend, Dan Gurney.
